I am a Sri Lankan student reading for masters in Ireland. I am planning to bring my wife here for 3 months on a visit/tourist visa. I would be very much grateful to you if you can give me a rough estimate of the amount that we have to show in (either my or her) bank account statements in order to obtain visa? A rough estimate would suffice with a little explanation if possible. Thank you.

Here’s a link to the Dept of Foreign site for visa requirements to enter Ireland.
It does not specify an amount that you should have, but it clearly states that a lump sum lodged to your/her account shortly before applying for the visa is not allowed!
If I understand your question correctly, you are living in Ireland, so your wife would be staying with you, which means no accommodation or eating out expenses are required. It’s difficult to know how much, but a minimum figure might be in the region of €3000…possibly more.
Maybe some other foreign students might have more accurate information.

As magidge already told there is no certain sum specified by the Irish Government and it is dependent upon the decision of the visa officer at the Irish Embassy/ Consulate abroad. It also depends on the ties to her country your spouse is able to prove. Some European Schengen countries however have certain standard settings concerning financial requirements which may be used as a guideline. France requires visa applicants to hold at least the amount of the minimum daily salary (€60.97 ~ €61.00) per day of stay. For a 90-day valid tourist visa it would be €5,490.00. Applicants holding an official sponsored proof of accommodation need to hold the half amount of the minimum daily salary which would be €2,745.00. Germany requires prove of fund availability of €5,400.00 for a 90-day visa and Spain €5,616.00.
I don’t know your living conditions as a student and whether you may be able to sponsor your spouse by providing accommodation.
Be prepared to have her application disapproved unless she’s able to provide proof of strong ties to her country. Too many people of your country have neglected visa rules in the past which has led to the fact that nationals of Sri Lanka even need visa to transit through European Union airports without actually entering the countries. ..
