The Beara peninsula is unforgettably beautiful and you should definitely visit Killarney with its national Park and lovely waterfalls and lakes and the lovely town of Kenmare with its stone circle and painted houses.. Cobh is interesting with the Titanic Museum (it's where the Titanic sailed from.) Beware of Hotels offering cheap room rates - some of them charge 28 Euro each for breakfast ! Most BB's include a big breakfast in their prices... Bit of stereotyping going on above! Also, most BBs are currently about as expensive as hotels. Definitely get more for your money aswell. Issues like religion, marriage breakdown, abortion, immigration into Ireland, and sexual abuse are probably best avoided. If you're anywhere in the northern half of the island (near Northern Ireland or the border areas) then do not discuss religion at all. Most pubs also do food now, so the best thing to do is shop around for a deal. Be advised that they like to load up on butter and cream, so you should plan in a good brisk walk every day. Beer is generic, Guinness, Murphys, Busweiser, Heineken, Harp are standard, you also get Irish brews like Smithwicks and Magners cider, and many places also do import beers. A good place to visit is the Burren in County Clare, I suggest staying in Lisdoonvarna, and the Roadside Tavern does good meals. Galway city is also fun, but perhaps a bit pricier. When planning your actual car journey, please bear in mind that distances take longer to travel in Ireland simply because the road infrastructure is not made for large volumes of high speed traffic. I live in County Limerick, Limerick city is about 120 miles from Dublin, but it takes about 3 hours to get there, longer if it's Friday afternoon. All major road signs are now in kilometres, not miles, and on main roads the speed limit is 100 km per hour, 120 on the few motorways we have. Rather than staying in hotels, I would advise either family-friendly Bed Breakfasts, or even hostels, some of which have evening activities for children so that Mum and Dad can go out for a drink. You cannot bring children into a pub after 9 pm anymore, it's illegal. By 'children' I mean anyone under 18. Smoking in pubs and cafes and restaurants is also illegal. For the tourist sites, visit. Be sure to see the west of the country, and also Donegal if you can. Of course there is also plenty to do and see in Dublin and Wicklow. Not forgetting the South, and the Midlands, you will not see everything, so you will have to come back again many times. You will need to go into some of the tourist offices for information. Don't Forget to visit Killarney. There are many pubs around where you will get Beer, Ceoil(music) agus (and) Craic. You can talk to any Irish people about religion or politics, but be prepared for a long discussion. Enjoy your self and have fun. There are so many places to see and things to do. They serve beer at the top and you can drink and enjoy the awesome view of Dublin. I also liked the Temple Bar, The Auld Dubliner, The Oliver St. John Gogarty bar, and bunch of others located right be each other. We did a pub crawl that was loads of fun. There's plenty of restaurants nearby also. People are friendly, we didn't discuss religion, but we took a tour and they mentioned the Catholic and Protestant issues, but didn't make a big deal out of it. If your family's not the drinking type, then I suggest to get a map and walk around..check out Trinity College and the book of Kells...take tours of the countryside..there are plenty of those..we did a bus tour down to Powerscourt Gardens and they were beautiful...or take an underground tour..I didn't do the one in Dublin, but I went on one in Scotland that was really creepy..I imagine it's just as creepy in Dublin...Enjoy your trip..I can't wait to go back there.
